SIG-RURAL: a Geoportal for Local Action Groups management in Extremadura.

Abstract:
Since 1991 and supported by LEADER Initiative and other an additional program, such as PRODER, the European Union has been managment and putting into practice rural development policies to favor and promote both economic and socially, these areas which have historically been disadvantaged. In this Project it has been designed a Geoportal to visualize LEADER Initiatives and PRODER programs which have been carried out into Extremadura region. To do this it has been used open source software such as MapServer or Apache. This Geoportal facilitates physical, demographic, economic, and equipments variables and investments through activity measures, organized in a cartographic and alphanumeric database on municipal scale. On the one hand, this GeoPortal design enables to analyze policies impact during the last sixteen years, as well as to establish its contribution to improve life condition of rural population, undoubtedly, the main objective of these Initiatives. On the other hand, since it is based on open source GIS software, it provides public data search, free for users.
