Abstract:
Information technology (IT) is universally regarded as fundamental in developing the competitiveness of firms. For this reason it is fundamental to understand what are the drivers of IT adoption by firms. This is the goal of this dissertation. We analyzed the following IT adoptions: Internet, web site, B2B e-commerce, e-commerce and e-business, and developed seven studies. In the first four of these we analyze IT adoption by firms in the Portuguese context. In the last three studies we used data from 27 European Union (EU) countries. We used a TOE framework in the first five studies; the sixth study was based on a combination of the TOE and the Iacovou et al. model; in the last study we suggest a new research model to understand B2B e-commerce adoption and use, based on the theory of contextualism by Pettigrew and Whipp.
