Automatic segmentation of corneal nerves structures using region growing approach

Abstract:
Confocal microscopy provides morphological information of corneal structures with great importance in early diagnosis of various diseases. Changes in corneal sub-basal nerve plexus may be the basis of a simple and noninvasive method for detection and follow-up of diabetic neuropathy. In this work we propose an automatic methodology, based on region growing approaches, capable of identifying corneal nerves and determine several morphometric parameters.. The average percent of nerve length correctly segmented by the algorithm was 87.1% ± 8.1%. The average specificity is 0.4%, meaning that no corneal structures were falsely classified as nerves.
